Turkiye’s founder, Mustafa kemal Ataturk, at an old ottoman/greek mansion in his hometown.

We had a short hike through rose valley; called that because of the iron in the soil making the hills red.

Mustafapasa: literally, General mustafa. Originally named sinosus, it was renamed after Ataturk after turkey sent off its Greeks to Greece, and Greece its Turks to Turkey. There are a lot of old buildings that were made of stone and carved; here we are in front of some.

Ortohisar castle: the middle castle. We stopped here for some pictures and tea. This is one of three carved castles in Kapadokya.

Greg really liked yesterday’s breakfast. This is part one of today’s breakfast (missing the cereal, breakfast cake, and fruit). Today they brought out some toasty tortilla thing with dill goat cheese — really tasty!

We visited the goreme open air museum, which is a bunch of church complex carved into the rock formations. Each complex had a church, theological room, kitchen, dining room, and pantry. 50-60 monks lived in each one. Each room would take about two days to carve (judging by the gouge sizes, they must have dug with spoons)

Breakfast of dried fruits, cheeses, bread, and olives.

No Mary Poppins or chimney sweeps here – still very interesting rock formations

If this was the amazing race I don’t think we did too poorly – it only took us about half an hour to find Ziggys

Day one
After spending a full day and a half either at the airport or in the plane, we finally made it to Cappadocia (kapadokya in turkish). We visited an underground cave settlement (the world’s first bunkers), stone carved monastery, and caravanserai which was a free motel for traders on the silk road. Dinner was really tasty mezes at ziggy’s, and finally we got a bed to sleep on at our cave hotel.

Istanbul airport this time going to Kayseri oh change that to Nevsehir – I hate flying.

Oh joy made it to France – unfortunately we didn’t make it out try our hardest to leave parrie
Bought a 15min calling card to call Turkish travel agency – oh the fun. Got 15min free Wi-Fi at deGaulle so time to email and post

On a jet plane – Melissa wanted to bring along some friends to Turkey

Phillip’s European serves lunch and dinner, but their specialty is really desserts. Their cakes, tortes, etc are really tasty and served in relatively large portions. The patrons tend to be an older crowd (as it is a “European” restaurant so the ambiance is pretty quiet.
